5 Tips for Working out While Traveling
We work hard for months and months going to the gym and dieting to try and reach our “summer body” goals. The problem is it’s hard to maintain that discipline and commitment while traveling.
The sad truth is, regardless if you are traveling for vacation during the summer or if you are traveling for other reasons, such as work, working out while traveling isn’t quite as easy. We tend to struggle to be on a different schedule and not being in familiar surroundings, we make excuses to not get in our daily exercise, but the truth is there are ways to work out while you travel, and it doesn’t have to be difficult.
#1 Don’t make excuses, prioritize working out
One of the biggest reasons people fail to stick to working out when they travel is simply because they make excuses not to. When you are on vacation it is easy to come up with justification as to why you “can’t” workout. Don’t let the reasons such as being on a different schedule, being out of your element, or not having your gym in the area be reasons for not sticking to your exercise goals. If you make working out while you travel a priority, we guarantee you can make it happen; and you will be glad that you did.
#2 Do your research
Before you leave for your trip, do your research. Figure out whether your hotel has a workout room you can use. If they don’t have a gym, they may have a pool you can do a quick workout in. This way you will be prepared and you can bring your workout clothes or a swimsuit, or any workout gear you may need. By knowing ahead of time what you should expect you will be more likely to make fewer excuses.
#3 Don’t put it off.
A good way to make sure you get your workout in is by just getting it over with. Wake up and do your workout as soon as you can ensure that you do it. Sometimes if you tell yourself you will do it later you will once again find a way to make an excuse not to. Traveling is tiring and you are much more likely to get your workout done if you do it first thing in the day than if you wait until you are tired in the late afternoon or evening.
#4 Use what you have available to you
If you do your research like in the above tip, you will likely know ahead of time what is available to you. Find a nearby walking trail, use the hotel gym or pool, or even utilize the 15-level staircase at your hotel. You’d be amazed at what you can do with even just a chair and the floor. So, be prepared, and use what you have.
#5 Make your workout fun
Working out on vacation or while traveling for any other reason doesn’t have to be tedious or boring. Take it as an opportunity to explore a new city, or to change up your routine a bit. Look up local walking tours or maybe go on a hike in a nearby park or nature reserve. Don’t be afraid to step out of your element, you may be surprised how much you end up enjoying it.
